Region Caving Weekend 2016

The weekend will be held at the Fitzpatrick Trackhead Camping Reserve ($10 per person per night) in Wee Jasper (South of Yass). Transport arrangements will need be made by individuals or their Units/Crews. As people will be arriving at various stages on Friday night (or Sat morning), we will have a meeting at 8:30am on Saturday morning. Units/Crews will be divided into groups (based on caving ability/experience) and given the opportunity to explore 2 to 3 caves throughout the weekend. All beginning cavers are encouraged to attend! No cavers are also welcome to attend, there is a plethora of activities nearby, including 4x4ing, fishing, bushwalking, and of course relaxing around the fire!

Food should be provided individually by each Crew/Unit for the entire weekend. Make sure that you bring snacks to eat while you are underground (wrapped snacks that avoid direct hand on food contact) for morning/afternoon tea, and take your rubbish out with you! Cavers will be returned to camp so they can prepare and eat lunch and dinner. Please note these is NO DRINKING WATER available at the campsite – you must bring your own with you!

Tent camping. Toilet and shower facilities are available, with showers strongly recommended after caving.

In addition to your overnight camping equipment, clothes food etc, for caving you will need to bring:
– Overalls (or a sturdy pair of long pants and long-sleeved shirt that can get very dirty)
– Enclosed shoes (that can also get dirty)
– Head torch AND spare batteries
– A spare torch
– Caving helmet (or alternatively a bike helmet)
– A backpack with a drink bottle and some snacks (can be shared between a few people).

Where required, harnesses and abseiling gear will be provided, although if you have your own feel free to bring it along.

The weekend will be run by a number of Guide Level SIS10 qualified Caving Leaders.

There is an opportunity for participants to achieve their SIS10 Level 1 Caving certification. We encourage all participants to print off the emailed workbook and try and complete prior to the weekend. We can answer questions about the qualification during the weekend.

Any experienced cavers wanting to obtain their Level 1 or 2 Caving Qualifications should contact Rob Hatton (RC-Activities). You will need a Log Book documenting your caving experience. The expectation for Level 2 Caving is you have at least 40 hours experience across a number of different caving system.

– Region gear use $20 per person (even if you have your own gear)
Please bring the $40 cash on the day with your signed E1. No one will be permitted underground without a signed E1.
