Venturer and Rover Region Bungonia Weekend 2017

The South Coast and Tablelands Regional Rock Team will be hosting a Caving and Canyoning weekend on the weekend of 24-26 February at Bungonia State Conservation Area. The event will include Caving and Canyoning. The weekend is open to all Scout Coast & Tablelands Venturers, Rovers and Leaders.

WHERE:

The weekend will be held at the Bungonia State Conservation Area near Goulburn. Transport arrangements will need be made by individuals or their Units/Crews. Those arriving before 8:00PM Friday night will have the opportunity for an introductory cave trip. Saturday will kick off with a meeting at 8:00AM sharp.. Units/Crews will be divided into groups (based on activity, ability and experience).

ACTIVITIES:

Participants will be given the opportunity to do caving and/or canyoning. Sessions will be planned to support the experience of those who attend. You will have the opportunity to do 2 or 3 sessions over the weekend.

FOOD:

Food should be provided individually by each Crew/Unit for the entire weekend. Make sure that you bring snacks to during your activities (wrapped snacks that avoid direct hand on food contact are best for caving). There is filtered drinking water available on site

CAMPING / FACILITIES:

Tent camping. Toilet and shower facilities are available, with showers strongly recommended after caving. All participants will be required to bring their own equipment as for a ‘standing camp.’ That being tents, food, cooking gear, etcetera.

CAVING GEAR:

For caving you will need to bring:

– Overalls (or a sturdy pair of long pants and long-sleeved shirt that can get very dirty)

– Enclosed shoes (that can also get dirty)

– Head torch AND spare batteries

– A spare torch

– Caving helmet (if you have one)

– A backpack with a drink bottle and some snacks (can be shared between a few people).

Where required, harnesses and abseiling gear will be provided, although if you have your own feel free to bring it along.

CANYONING GEAR:

For Canyoning you will need a day pack, a packed lunch, water (2L), sun cream, personal first aid kit, hat, head torch and snacks. A ‘dry bag’ may be used to keep some items dry, plastic bags will not be sufficient. All participants will also need to wear enclosed shoes that can get wet, with good grip (Volleys or similar are good, neoprene booties are not).

QUALIFICATIONS:

The weekend will be run by a number of Guide level SIS10 qualified Abseiling, Caving and Canyoning leaders.

If you want to work towards your Abseiling, Caving or Canyoning qualifications then I encourage you all to print off the attached workbooks and try and complete them prior to the weekend.  We can answer questions about the qualification during the weekend.

Anyone more experienced wanting to obtain their Level 2 Abseiling, Caving or Canyoning should contact me.  You will need a Log Book documenting your relevant experience. The expectation for Level 2 Caving is you have at least 40 hours experience across a number of different caving system. For level 2 Canyoning you need to have extensive canyoning experience.
